As simple as it sounds, you should get good locks for your doors.  Add locks to every outside door including the garage, since that is the place that most break-ins start from.  Deadbolts should be a necessary part of your home security plan.  Heavy duty locks like these, if installed properly, will go a long way towards keeping your home safe.  Locks, along with doors that are made to resist break-ins can really prevent someone unwanted to come inside your home.

Make sure all ground floor windows have locks on them also.  A window can easily be broken and climbed through.  Most windows already have some type of locking system, these should be adequate, but if you want to go all out, you can invest in a shatter-proof window or some sort of hard to break window.  Sliding glass doors are easily broken through also.
